Math Learning Communities (MLCs)
The EdVestors Mathematics Learning Community (MLC) initiative is in its second year, supporting teams from ten Boston schools as they develop collaborative structures to improve math teaching and learning. Each school forms an internal math team—including educators, leaders, and where possible, students and caregivers—to investigate a self-identified problem of practice such as curriculum implementation or improving student discourse. These teams collect and analyze data, and partner with one or two other schools, who have identified similar challenges, to form MLCs. A central feature of the initiative is this Summer Institute, where teams deep-dive into content and curriculum planning sessions for the year ahead.
MLCs collaborate through site visits, peer feedback, and data analysis to study their problems of practice and share learnings with their broader school communities. Funding includes stipends, professional learning opportunities, and discretionary funds for school-based events and logistics. The initiative emphasizes inclusivity, offering additional support for expenses like childcare and transportation to ensure full participation. The underlying theory of action is that empowering schools to co-design professional learning fosters stronger math instruction, deeper student engagement, and better outcomes for teachers and students.
