Mathematics Director

Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the mathematics work at EdVestors. The Director will assume responsibility for all aspects of mathematics program design and implementation, including Wicked Math, working closely with City of Boston civic leaders, academic leaders in Boston Public Schools and other nonprofit partners. This will require a balance of strategic thinking, project management, and collaborative partnership to build on and expand program impact. The Director will leverage the collective knowledge from EdVestors’ prior and current work to inform program design and implementation, with a specific focus on equitable system-level impact. The Director will bring an equity lens to all aspects of the work, including external strategy, partnership, and internal program leadership.

Responsibilities

The Director will be responsible for the following key areas:

Planning and Implementation

  • Drive all aspects of the mathematics program strategy including program iterations and overall strategic direction
  • Manage the day-to-day aspects of the mathematics work, including planning and facilitating team meetings, communicating with internal and external stakeholders, and providing regular updates of progress toward program goals
  • Engage a diverse set of stakeholders (e.g., educators, school leaders, district leaders, community partners, students, families, etc.) to inform planning and decision making around strategy, program development, grant making and evaluation
  • Oversee collection, analysis, and presentation of program data to internal and external stakeholder audiences
  • Ensure that all aspects of mathematics program work reflect a commitment to equity, including racial equity
  • Supervise and coach staff and/or external consultants to support implementation efforts, as needed

Convening and Professional Development

  • Engage with individual math educators and educator cohorts to support progress toward program goals (e.g., coaching calls, school/class observations, meeting facilitation, resource sharing, planning support, etc.)
  • Facilitate field building activities to build a coordinated and effective mathematics ecosystem in Boston, such as mathematics professional development with key partners and Wicked Math convenings

Grant Making

  • Facilitate the design and implementation of existing and new grant initiatives
  • Administer grant selection processes, including internal and/or external review teams
  • Monitor funded projects through reports, site visits, and progress updates from grantees

External Relations

  • Develop and maintain stakeholder relationships including schools, higher education institutions, community partners, and funders
  • Partner with mathematics leaders from BPS and other key stakeholders to realize a district-wide vision for equitable mathematics opportunities, practices, and outcomes
  • Contribute to a communications and outreach strategy to build broad ownership and understanding of the importance of mathematics education
  • Manage biannual Math Advisory Board meetings and other opportunities to engage stakeholders
  • Represent EdVestors at external meetings, events, and speaking engagements where applicable

Management and Organizational Development

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to advance program and organizational priorities
  • Initiate, organize, and participate in team and staff activities that contribute to organizational culture in keeping with organizational values
  • Develop and oversee the annual program budget in consultation with the VP of Finance & Operations and VP of Programs and Equity
  • Contribute to fundraising strategies and efforts related to mathematics and support development efforts in the submission of funding proposals and reports to donors
  • Support programmatic aspects of EdVestors events several times per year
  • Other program tasks and projects as needed/assigned

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in mathematics education with demonstrated success leading toward equitable outcomes for students
  • A strong understanding of key issues, curriculum, and promising practices in K12 mathematics instruction, especially in large, complex, urban settings; knowledge of the Boston Public Schools and the Boston education ecosystem is a plus
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience with collaborative projects and processes
  • Strong facilitation skills and adult learning pedagogy, specifically for groups of individuals with diverse backgrounds and educators engaged in peer learning
  • Partner-focused orientation, with an ability to cultivate and navigate relationships with a range of internal and external partners
  • Experience in program development, management (including budget development and management), and evaluation
  • Outstanding organizational skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to see projects through to completion and manage multiple priorities in collaboration with others
  • Strong research skills, with an ability to synthesize large amounts of information and communicate key ideas to a range of internal and external audiences
  • Experience developing, motivating, and managing individuals and teams
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills; fluency in other languages is an asset
  • A passion for the role of mathematics in the lives of students and schools
  • A deep commitment to advance racial equity in public education in Boston, alignment with EdVestors’ values, and a desire to be part of a team that is committed to growth and learning related to racial equity
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency with Google and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word/Docs and Excel/Sheets) and with Zoom video conferencing

Compensation

The expected starting salary for this position is $85,000-$95,000 per year. EdVestors offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, life insurance and disability benefits, 401k plan contribution and match, professional development funds, and paid time off that includes three weeks of vacation, organization-wide recharge days, holidays, and sick time. This is a Boston-based role. EdVestors has adopted a hybrid work structure of at least two days (16 hours) per week in office and/or other in-person engagement; this role may require additional in-person presence for the purposes of building and sustaining relationships and implementing programmatic work.
